They lived at Harponville, France whis is about 92 miles from Paris. Left France May 27, 1857 on a sailing ship from Harve De France. Arrived in the U.S.A. 34 days later. Grandmother Turben had seasickness druing the entire voyage. The Wales and sea animals followed the ship all the way. They had terrible storms which rocked the ship. Each family had to bring their own food supply and cooking utensils, bedding, etc. After landing in New York the Turben family went to Philadelphia and from there they came to Gallopolis, Ohio, which was a French settlement. From there they moved to Pomeroy, Ohio and later they brought a farm at Bashin, Ohio. They lived there a short time and then sold this farm and bought a farm in Olive Township. They lived there until Grandfather died April 6, 1890. When the home and farm was sold Granmother went to live with her daughter, Susan Turben Rice, who lived in Belpre, Ohio, spending the summer months with her daughter Lydia Turben Matlack & family. When in France Grandmother Turben taught cooking and sewing and she went from house to house. Grandfather baked and sold bread. He built his own oven which he baked the bread in. He built a small oven for baking bread on the Olive Township home for family use. Grandfather was also a word turner by trade. He brought his turning lathes with him to the U.S.A. He was a fine workman & many homes were furnished with fire side & rocking chairs of all sizes, also tables & stands. Every time there was a grandchild born, when old enough it was given a rocking chair which he made. A homestead of 20 acres was all the land one family was allowed to own in France. In France Grandfather was considered a wealthy man. The money he brought with him was all in gold which filled a good size chest he had made in his workshop. He also brought 60 ladies gold watched, 24 shot guns, several bolts of home spun linen and a grandfather clock which stood on the floor. This clock was still in his home when he died. A jeweler bought this clock and the last we heard of it a New York jeweler owned it. Grandfather brought three men (cousins of his) when he came from France at a cost to him $300.00 each. We have no record of what became of them. One of the men's names was Tautry. He lived in Pomeroy the last account of him. Grandfather was a very generous man. Our grandparents were members of the Presbyterian Church at Tuppers Plains. Later they transferred their membership to the United Breathern at Pleasant Grove. They were the parents of eight children and four died in infancy. The names of the for living who came to America with them in the year 1857 are as follows: Obidiah, who married Virginia Martin.
